GIN

"I must get out of these clothes and into a Dry Martini."

Alexander WoolcBallsf~1.gif (1653 bytes)tt.

The Dry Martini

Much dispute has arisen over this, the most famous of all of those under the category of "Cocktail". Recipies have benn disputed on and on and will no doubt be continued to do so on the subject of its composition, proportions and additives. The 'Classic' which is below is the best mix I have experienced so far. If you have reason or recipie to dispute this then please let me know...

The Classic

1 part Vermouth

7 parts Gin

Keeping in mind that the quality of the cocktail itself is equally matched only by the quaility of the ingreedients which are combined to produce it, thus the only the highest quality of the gins and vermouths would produce the finest Dry Martini.

The Vodkatini

1 part Vermouth

7 parts Vodka

Indeed, not a Dry Martini but the Vodkatini certainly occupies a certain chic, but for the die-hards such substitution will simply just not do. Neither is it acceptable to substiture the vermouth with a dry sherry. It has alsBallsf~1.gif (1653 bytes) been known for a dash of orange bitters or Pernod. But if you are to do something, then do it properly, right?

Ice is nice...

One of the most important of the ingredients for the Dry Martini and yet another highly debatable subject. Some argue that all ingreedients (enough for one round only) should be thrown into the jug and briskly stirred and then just as quickly strained and poured. Others dispute this saying that no ice should be used as it dilutes the flavours of the cocktail. Others say that the ice must be removed before pouring as this is when too much dilution occurs. Personally, some dilution is not Ballsf~1.gif (1653 bytes)nly beneficial to your Dry Martini but one of the essential aspects of it!

Got an olive?

The additions to the Dry Martini is also another subject to itself (one I will not proceed to enter into here). Many varitations have been sugested and experimented with but as always it always comes down to personal taste. Most of the hardcore Martinians know the story of the American who sat silently as a bartender expertly mixed his cocktail. As the bartender reached for a slice of lemon rind the man spoke up, stopping him with, 'When I want a fruit salad, I'll ask for it.'

The staking of the olive in the Martini for some, has become a standard which is ferverently followed. Others prefer the Gibson approach which substitutes the olive with a small cocktail onion. Lemon rind, or other additives, flBallsf~1.gif (1653 bytes)ated or submerged, all are a reflection of taste and preference. There is no, one, be-all and end-all, Dry Martini. The real Dry Martini is undisputedly the most famous, civilized, apetising, interesting, stimulating and cleanest of all   cocktails.
